Positive education
School plays a significant role to promote
value of human relationship. This corresponds with holistic vision of the
school which is no longer looking at being agent for academic excellence. In a
modern view, expectation for the existence of school has been expanded. School
needs to get close with the reality of daily life. In the perspective of
positive education, schooling is not operated within the system where students
are oriented towards achieving accomplishment, success, literacy, and
discipline. This is how the society experience depression among young people.
There is a need to pursue a balance between well-being and achievement (Seligman
et al., 2009:293-294).
Positive education is built upon
positivity that life has meaning and purpose. It is through meaningful and purposeful
social interaction that human being
should achieve in this life. It covers the
whole school community to maintain positive climate. Everyone in the school should
follow the common language of positivity. In the cultural level, this practice
is ‘hidden curriculum’ where actually people have freedom ‘to stay outside the
structure’ to contribute positivity.
Those who are involved in school’s leadership
team develop mindset of positivity through culture of working together and
sharing the common vision. While in the classroom, teachers are encouraged to
adopt more creative way ‘to go beyond teaching’. It is meant to be spending quality
time with the students. Teachers play crucial part in creating meaningful
experience. In my view, this is moment of celebration where collaborative
engagement approach is made relevant.
Students need to be exposed with cultural
diversity. Being different is tolerable
as far as it can always be open for dialog. Context of cultural diversity has
become effective medium to test out collaborative engagement. Students are
familiarized with healthy and meaningful relationship through active
participation in collaborative engagement.
Looking at different side, the world has
been globalized by the revolution of Information and Communication Technology
(ICT). Trend of internet addiction and
the favoritism of virtual world among young people have challenged the school. How
positive education can have flexibility to deal with this? In what way that positive education can be
applied? If technology is in the main domain
of our daily life and modernization is part of it, positive education should be
able to reach out ‘the reason’ and attitude. The key point is that positivity
should also be about being more reasonable and critical. It is a combined character
of open-mindedness and reflective. (c) ignherisw2017
